Usman Afzaal

Afzaal’s Indian heritage is borne out in his strokeplay, which earned him three Test caps during the 2001 Ashes.

His wristy batsmanship and efficient left-arm spin - he dismissed Adam Gilchrist with his third ball in Tests - were not enough to extend his international career although he toured India that winter.

Afzaal had already played for England at under-15 and under-17 level before representing Nottinghamshire from 1995.

He was released at the end of the 2003 campaign and joined Northamptonshire, averaging almost 60 in the county championship in his first season at Wantage Road.

However, his performances gradually dipped and Afzaal was released in late in the 2007 season, by mutual consent.

He agreed to join Surrey, citing his ambition to reignite his international career, but suffered championship relegation in his first season.

His career-best 204 not out against Northants in June 2009 helped earn his first championship win at Surrey.
