Laxman is a stylish batsman who has been part of India's much-revered middle-order for over a decade.
In 2001 Laxman scored 281 against Australia in Kolkata as he and Rahul Dravid helped India beat Steve Waugh's previously invincible side having been forced to follow on.
Laxman has a tremendous record against Australia but there is a general feeling his Test average could have been even higher were it not for a number of starts that were not converted into centuries.
Laxman represented Lancashire in 2007 as an overseas player and scored 380 runs at an average of 53 in five matches.
He agreed to return to Old Trafford for the 2009 campaign.
