The nephew of the famed apartheid-era batsman Henry Fotheringham, Madsen was a successful opening batsman for KwaZulu-Natal before deciding to ply his trade in England. Success in club cricket for Ramsbottom and Carnsforth earned him Second XI appearances for Derbyshire in 2009, where he made 135. Derbyshire’s top-order problems made a first-team debut almost inevitable, and he started with a thrilling unbeaten 170 against Gloucestershire, following up with another ton versus Surrey.
