The nephew of the famed apartheid-era batsman Henry Fotheringham, Madsen was a successful opening batsman for KwaZulu-Natal before deciding to ply his trade in England. Success in club cricket for Ramsbottom and Carnsforth earned him Second XI appearances for Derbyshire in 2009, where he made 135.
