The promising paceman from Port Elizabeth made a name for himself at the 2008 Under-19 World Cup as South Africa captain. He took 18 wickets and made valuable middle-order contributions to guide South Africa to the final where they lost to India. Parnell made his full international debut during Australia’s 2008/09 tour of Australia but it was in the return series that he made a real impression in the limited overs internationals. He did enough to impress Kent who signed him on an initial short-term deal at the start of the 2009 season, as cover for overseas player Stuart Clark.
