A typical product of the Yorkshire fast bowling academy which also produced fellow England internationals Matthew Hoggard and Chris Silverwood.
Made his debut for his home county in 1997 and was capped in 2000 when he was the top English bowler and second overall in the first-class averages
Claimed his maiden five-wicket haul when he took 5-27 against Kent and followed it up with 6-16 in the second innings.
Was selected for England A's tour of the Caribbean the following winter, where he was the leading wicket-taker, and in the summer of 2001 he was handed his Test debut against Pakistan.
That saw him become only the 10th player to follow in his father’s footsteps by playing Test cricket for England, with Arnie Sidebottom having also represented Yorkshire and his country as well as playing football for Manchester United and Huddersfield Town.
Sidebottom failed to take a wicket at Lord’s, where he deputised for Hoggard, and was subsequently dropped although he featured in two one-day internationals on the tour of Zimbabwe later that year.
Helped Yorkshire win the County Championship in 2001 but left the club by mutual consent at the end of the 2003 season and, after also holding talks with Durham and Hampshire, decided to join Nottinghamshire on a three-year deal.
An integral part of Nottinghamshire gaining the County Championship title in 2005, he ended the season with 50 first-class wickets.
Signed a new two-year contract with Notts in March 2006, and finished the season with 41 championship wickets at a shade under 28 apiece.
Won a recall to the England squad for the second Test against West Indies in 2007 after a six-year absence, having taken 13 wickets at an average of 26 in the first four games of the season.
Impressed with the ball so much that he was rewarded with a place in the one-day squad for the NatWest Series against India.
He was named in the ICC World Twenty20 squad but had to pull out through injury.
He was rewarded for an excellent summer with a 12-month central contract and handed a place in the 15-man one-day squad to tour Sri Lanka in October 2007.
