Manuka Oval

Manuka

The venue has hosted two international games, the first dating back to the 1992 World Cup

The Manuka Oval in Canberra will stage two group games including England's opening match against Sri Lanka on Saturday March 7.

Two days later Sri Lanka will play Pakistan at the same venue as the battle to emerge from Group B hots up.

With a capacity of 15,000, the ground is well-known for hosting the annual Prime Minister’s XI against the touring side, although it is also used for Aussie Rules and rugby matches.

There have been two international matches played here, the first during the 1992 World Cup when Peter Kirsten inspired South Africa to a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe.

There was a 16-year wait until the next international match when Sri Lanka beat India in a rain-affected match.

The ground has undergone a recent facelift, costing $9 million, which included new tiered seating, extension of the terraces at the northern and southern ends with individual stadium seating, inner bowl of stadium seating in front of concrete terraces, construction of a viewing bank on the eastern side to accommodate corporate marquees or portable seating and minor landscape improvements.

However, despite that work one of the main features remains - the Jack Fingleton Scoreboard.

This was originally the scoreboard at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, recycled when the MCG installed its first electronic board in the early 1980s. It was relocated to Manuka and named after the late Australian opening batsman who made his career as a political journalist in the corridors of Parliament House, just a few kilometres away.
