A solid foundation

Posted in NatWest CricketForce 2009

Work is well and truly underway at Sacriston in preparation for our highly anticipated NatWest CricketForce weekend.

The concrete base is now complete for the new pavilion and has taken a huge amount of effort from many volunteers over the last two to three weeks – thank you to all concerned.

Firstly, 60 four-foot concrete beams had to be positioned over the brick foundations (each weighing the equivalent of an adolescent elephant I’m sure) and then over 1,000 concrete blocks to plug the gaps so that a concrete screed could be applied.

Drainage is in and we’re all set to start erecting the timber frame on Friday. All of the manufacture has been completed and the roof trusses delivered. Weather permitting we should have the shell of the building up in what surely will be a “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” experience.

Now that all of the heavy stuff is inside the ground the block paved patio can be completed and we hope to have this all done before the big weekend. The lads who have carried out this work (a lot of it in their own time) have been fantastic and we cannot thank them enough.

The hard standing area next to the new state-of-the-art practise nets (for bags and coaches to get close to the action) is also aimed to be completed before the weekend.

The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) are arriving on Friday to carry out some preparation work before returning on Sunday to complete the planting of hedgerow and trees that will improve the vista of the ground dramatically.

It only seems like five minutes ago since ECB's Dave Leighton asked us if we were up for a challenge. It’s been challenging in many ways and I would like to thank everyone on behalf of the club for all of the support and work that has been done to date.

It’s going to be a brilliant weekend and hopefully the start of an exciting year and years for Sacriston Colliery Cricket Club.

I’ll be back after the event to let you know how it all went, so watch this space!
