Our fitness, strength and conditioning plus speed of recovery will be crucial

Happy New Year and welcome to 2012.....Olympic Year!

First of all our congratulations must go to Andy Flower for winning the sportcoach UK Coach of the Year award and BBC Coach of the Year award for 2011. Add to this the achievements of the England Test side winning Team of the Year.

A tremendous endorsement for cricket and the work undertaken from grass roots to elite level in the men’s and women’s game. Thousands of people are involved including professional staff and volunteers. As a friend commented to me recently having become involved in cricket: “It feels like a cricket family”.

For our Physical Disabilities squad we are less than five weeks from our first ever international PD series against Pakistan. An amazing opportunity all players, coaches and support staff are looking forward to.

Having the full England first team out in Abu Dhabi and Dubai adds to the excitement (and challenges)! Our latest training camp took place in the wonderful facilities at Ellesmere College, Shropshire. It was our penultimate get together before we head off on February 6.

Without giving away too many secrets the players and coaches departed energised, armed with a programme of action and training to integrate into their schedule. Our fitness, strength and conditioning plus speed of recovery will be crucial factors. Even the coaching staff are adding “ice baths” to their training!

This year offers much to look forward to. Our next training weekend takes place at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough from Friday January 27 before heading to Dubai a week later!
