Back to square one

My back's not made a lot of progress since I last blogged. I played a second XI match a month ago for Leicestershire against Derbyshire and I scored 75 runs, but batting for three hours did put me back quite considerably.

Sadly, it seems to have reverted into my left hip and I am seeing a hip specialist this Friday. Fingers crossed, a hip problem is better than a back problem so, from that point of view, it's a positive. I will hopefully get some good news.

I've been reduced to swimming over the last week and a half. I'm doing quite a lot of pool work like aqua jogging at Loughborough University. I quite enjoy making some good use of world-class facilities. It is good to be around different athletes and be inspired by my surroundings.

Sadly, results in the Friends Life t20 didn't go Leicestershire's way this year, but planning and preperation will be done and guys will learn from the experience which will be the main thing. There was pressure as champions.

I think missing half of your team from one year to the next means you are always going to struggle and defending the title was a tough ask even with a full squad available.

It's tough when you see young guys going out there in difficult situations because, although you are sat on the sidelines, you really feel that you can make a difference out there. You feel you are able to put in some performances and make the guys around you feel at ease and at their best because there are senior players around them.

The Netherlands have invested in high-quality coaches. They were always going to get stronger year in, year out like Scotland and Ireland

The team travelled to the Netherlands tonight and are playing in the Clydesdale Bank 40 in Amsterdam tomorrow. We are playing a team that is top of the table so there is no let up.

It's a chance for guys to put their hands up and I know Leicestershire have a lot of guys that are playing for pride and their futures.

It is an exciting time because there are guys like Michael Thornely, who has signed until the end of the season, and Ned Eckersley's had a good start to his career and there is an opportunity for him to kick on and make some good progress. Hopefully fortunes can turn around very soon and with a couple of wins in the next week.

We are trying to win every game we play. Netherlands have invested in some high-quality coaches. They were always going to get stronger year in, year out like Scotland and Ireland. It is no surprise strength in cricket is improving around certain countries beyond the British Isles.

It will be a demanding trip because the team are coming up against a very strong and confident unit at the moment. It's about negotiating their strengthens and bringing a confidence to our cricket that can put some results on the board.
