Busy as usual

Posted in ECB ACO

When anyone has asked "how are you?" in the last few weeks, I reply, as is my custom, "busy as usual".

The first thing that comes back is "well, at least the cricket is over now". This brings a smile to my lips and the comment "the matches have stopped but cricket carries on, off the field, all year round".

Just for starters my invite to the ECB ACO Conference Day has arrived and my club's AGM is looming. I somehow ended up as club secretary (still not quite sure how that happened), so there is enough paperwork for me to be getting on with just for that, thanks.

Courses for new scorers and umpires are looming and I am hoping to help out with a scorers' course in my area. As a teacher all my working life, the buzz of the job for me is sharing knowledge and the opportunity to pass on a skill.

Hopefully, I can encourage others that scoring is straightforward, quite good fun and a vital part of the game.

It has been suggested to me that I need to work on computer scoring - this is where some of my attention will be in the winter.

I have fairly good computer skills myself and am not put off by the technology, but do feel its cheating .

Pressing one button, when the manual system means you need to make five entries, seems like taking all the joy out of it for me. Allowing a computer to do all the adding up takes away all my hard work at ensuring I have made every entry in the right place at the right time, and, therefore, some of my satisfaction at the end of the match that it all adds up.

Funny that, because I do all my accounts on a computer to save me the same amount of work I am happy to do all day in the box.
