Highlight of the domestic calendar

Posted in Domestic Cricket

Friends Life t20 finals day is something every county cricketer wants to play in. The buzz, atmosphere, entertainment - everyone wants to be there and, fortunately for Somerset, it's our third finals day in succession and fourth in seven years.

I'll always have fond memories of 2005 when I hit the winning runs against Lancashire at the Oval. Lancashire had a brilliant team - Flintoff, Symonds, Anderson, Cork, Stuart Law - but they made just 114 for eight from their 16 overs. Graeme Smith won the game for us with 64 not out.

That is the highlight of my Somerset career so far and hopefully I can add another winner's medal this weekend.

Unfortunately things haven't gone as well since that damp night in south London and we lost to Sussex in the 2009 final and Hampshire last year.

Last year's final with Hampshire was an incredible game which they won on the last ball. That game will be mentioned a lot in the run-up to Saturday but we're not dwelling on it. It's a clean slate as far as we are concerned.

We are familiar with how they play. They are a really good team who are very spin-orientated with Imran Tahir, Shahid Afridi and Danny Briggs. It's going to be their spinners against our power hitters. I hope it's going to be a good wicket.

We've played pretty well in Twenty20 cricket this year. Everyone has contributed at some point during the season.

We will travel up to Edgbaston in confident mood, particularly after our excellent quarter-final win over Nottinghamshire Outlaws. Kieron Pollard and Jos Buttler played extraordinarily well to get us over the line when we looked down and out.

Chris Read & Kieron Pollard

A familiar sight - Polly launches another big shot during the quarter-final with Nottinghamshire. He hits the ball a long way

We know that with those two guys we can still win games even if we aren't in a great position.

Polly is our X-Factor cricketer. He's a big game player and thrives on occasions like this. He is awesome at times.

We have some big hitters in the team like Tres, Peter Trego and Buttler, but Polly hits it further than all of them. I've not seen someone hit the ball that far.

He's such a strong lad, he uses a big bat and is in a different league. It's so effortless. His mis-hits go for six whereas mine lob over the 30-yard circle.

I have been quite pleased with how I have played in T20s this year. I know my role which is to be the gel in the innings, to hold things together and make sure the big hitters get on strike.

This is my fourth finals day - not many people can say that. It's an honour and a privilege to have done so well.
