Each game is getting bigger

Posted in Domestic Cricket

Results have not gone the way we planned, heading into today's LV= County Championship match with Somerset, so every game is getting bigger. Liverpool has been a pretty good ground to us so hopefully it will work in our favour.

I think we have got to be realistic. We have not played as well as we could while also losing something like 1,000 overs to rain, which works out as quite a lot of days' cricket missed. The chances of winning the league again have to be considered pretty slim now. We are probably looking at the other end of the table and staying up.

It is not for a lack of effort. We have done everything the same as we did last year in preparation, if not better. But we have failed to put scores on the board with the bat. We have bowled well in patches, but let teams off. Last year we were doing everything over the full four days.

You could say the pitches in our last two championship matches were pretty different. The first was the flattest you have ever seen and the other one was like playing in the middle of Sri Lanka on a 15th-day pitch!

Guildford was brilliant for the fans. Kevin Pietersen got 234 not out in two sessions and played how one of the best batters in the world can play in a small ground on a flat pitch.

We got back to Old Trafford against Worcestershire and the wicket spun from the first morning of the game, gradually got worse and in the end we were on the receiving end of some pretty good spin bowling at both ends from Moeen Ali and Shaaiq Choudhry. Richard Jones did not bowl a ball in the game and he is their opening bowler.

At Old Trafford you are used to playing on spinning wickets, but I have never seen one turn and bounce like that. In the first session on the first day we had five men catching around the bat, which is a good indication of how much the wicket was turning.

We have obviously struggled over four days, but the lads are playing really good one-day cricket and we have a chance of getting to a final at Lord's in the Clydesdale Bank 40.

I recently joined a lot of the other guys in the squad on Twitter. I like to read what other people are up to. I follow people like Joey Barton or those in the music world.

It is quite funny because everyone gets stuck into each other. Obviously you have got to be careful what you say, but I think it is good chance to have a laugh with your mates.

Like most I have been taking in the Olympics. Women's beach volleyball is possibly the best game ever invented! They should have a league in England and put it on every Friday night on Sky.

Seriously though, you only get to see things like archery and shooting when it is on in the Olympics and even football has taken a back seat. I am looking forward to the athletics starting later this week.
