Time to turn things around

Posted in Domestic Cricket

We have not been able to string things together recently and our ten-wicket loss to Glamorgan this week was a great example.

We had a 125-run lead after the first innings but could not capitalise on our position and were bowled out for 71.

That then put our bowlers under pressure as the only way we were going to win was to take wickets. Unfortunately we didn't take any and lost comfortably.

We probably should have scored more than 291 in the first innings. Nico [Paul Nixon] played well in making 90 but he should have gone on and scored a big hundred. Boycey [Max Boyce] was the same and should have made more than 45. Andrew McDonald made an excellent hundred but there wasn't enough support.

Since our good start to the season we have not combined a good batting and bowling performance.

Our batting could be better. We have played on a few spicy wickets and we haven't been patient enough when the ball has been moving around. We keep losing wickets in clumps too. Quite often when we have a bad session, it's a really bad session.

I know I could do better. I'm averaging 24 - that's not good enough. I have been guilty of playing a few too many loose shots. The Tiflex balls we use swing quite a lot so I need to tighten up a bit. A big score is around the corner though and I'm feeling a bit better about my form after digging in and scoring 34 not out in the second innings against Glamorgan.

The mood in the dressing room is still quite good. Our form has been disappointing but we are confident of pulling through. A few positives are still coming out, like how we bowled in the first innings against Glamorgan. We are a young side and know we still have a lot to give.

We beat Durham in a CB40 game last weekend and although it was a one-day game, it showed what we can do. We are not far away from getting it right.

We play Middlesex in a championship game which starts on Saturday. We could really do with a win before we start our Friends Provident t20 campaign next week. We had an good session on Thursday - there was a real intensity from the players - so hopefully we can put it together and win.
