New year, fresh start

Posted in Domestic Cricket

I didn't think I would ever say this but I can't wait to start pre-season training with Warwickshire.

I have had a good rest since coming home early from the India one-day tour in October and am ready to get back into the swing of things.

It was really frustrating not to play more of a part in India. Although I missed the first two ODIs, I felt I progressed as a player and thought I might get a game as things weren't going our way.

Unfortunately I felt a twinge in my thigh in a net session and a scan later revealed a minor tear which meant flying home and missing the last three matches.

Once back in England I was told to put my feet up which also meant I could rest my shins which were sore for much of last season.

Being an all-rounder takes its toll on your body. I bowl my fair share of overs for Warwickshire and then start putting my pads on when we are three down, so I don't have much time to relax during a game. It's what you would expect being an all-rounder and I wouldn't change it.

After that initial rest period I was back working on my fitness. It was all low impact stuff though, like swimming and the spin bike - exercise that keeps me off my feet.

I'm feeling fit and refreshed now. I have played cricket continuously for three years with Warwickshire, England Lions and England so the break was good both physically and mentally.

Although a thigh injury cut short my time in India I felt I developed as a cricketer during my time out there with the England squad

It's been weird being in England for such a long time. It's also strange seeing both England and the Lions being away on tours and me being here. I have become used to being away during the winter.

It'll be good to see the Warwickshire lads again when we meet up this week. They worked really hard at the end of last year - there was a real emphasis on getting the players in good shape. They definitely deserved some time off over Christmas.

Although the season is a few months away it'll come around really quickly so it's important we put the hard work in now.
