Projects now decided
Posted in NatWest CricketForce 2009
The preparations for the involvement of Calne Cricket Club in CricketForce 2009 started during the summer of 2008.
The idea to take part was discussed at the tea interval at various cricket grounds around Wiltshire. So several cricket teas later, we began thinking about how we could make it happen.
We are very fortunate to be moving to Beversbrook, a purpose-built cricket facility on the edge of Calne. A few problems though – nowhere to store our equipment (mowers/rollers), no sightscreens, a patio that is too small, no pathway to the clubhouse, a big expanse of ground. Whoops!!! Sounds like a job for CricketForce.
The focus of the weekend will be to put the ‘finishing touches’ to the ground and give our community the chance to feel part of the development of the town’s latest sporting facility.
Our first job was to gather support for the project not only from the club but also from our local community. We arranged our meeting with Dave Leighton from the ECB on Tuesday16th at 7.30pm at the John Bentley School.
Thankfully over 90 people turned up to hear Dave’s motivational and reassuring words about how working together could bring about the development of the cricket facilities that the club has dreamed of.
October/ November 2008
We hear that we are to be a CricketForce showcase club! Great buzz of excitement around the place!
Lots of meetings and the ideas are flowing about what we are going to do. Ideas so far:
- Contact our Chance to shine schools to arrange a cricket tournament for Friday April 3
- On the evening of Friday April 3 hold a dinner to mark the beginning of CricketForce weekend (invite a guest speaker)
- Extend patio area
- Put up fencing around ground
- Put up a storage shed
January/ February 2009
Really hectic! People to see, materials to be resourced and a PA system to find!
Despite the snow things continue apace. This period of time has seen us working in partnership with Calne Town Council to develop the idea of involving other groups from Calne being at Beversbrook to be part of the weekend.
The list for projects to complete over the weekend has been decided and is as follows:
- Kwik Cricket tournament on Friday April 3 2009 for five local schools
- Sporting Dinner on Friday April 3 – guest speaker David Graveney OBE
- Sightscreens to be erected
- Fencing around ground
- Extend patio area
- Building a pathway
- Building storage shed
- Cricket coaching session for juniors
March will also see Signing Up Day on March 7 2009 at Calne Leisure Centre when any more volunteers can sign up to help over the weekend.
We owe a big vote of thanks to the following, whose support has made the plans for our CricketForce weekend possible:
Calne Town Council
White Horse Contractors
Haines Construction Southern Ltd
Calne Leisure Centre
Wiltshire Cricket Board
Four weeks to go and counting!
