Snainton lay volunteer path

December 2008, all excited about my new role as Northern Regional Volunteer Manager for the England & Wales Cricket Board, I went out into my area with enthusiasm but also trepidation. How would the counties and the clubs of the North react to this new concept of pro actively recruiting new young Volunteers?
One of my very first discussions was with John Jennings (J.J.) of Snainton CC of North Yorkshire. J.J. being a very active Volunteer at his club quickly realised the benefits of using the ECBs “V” programme to take his club to the next stage of development.
He signed up and added the role of Club Volunteer Co-ordinator to his existing portfolio and started the Volunteer Audit and review that was needed.
One of the first things he realised was he could not carry out the VC role as well as his other commitments so he recruited a dedicated young Club Volunteer Co-ordinator - and this is where the wonderful Gemma Nicholson came into the picture.
The club has since gone on from strength to strength with a dedicated team of new young Volunteers complimenting the excellent work of the people already there. More young cricketers then ever are being coached, facility enhancements have improved the club massively and most of all, the club is being successful on and off the field.
Recently two young Volunteers were rewarded for their efforts with tickets for the ODI at Headingley.
Picture shows Snainton CC's Volunteer Coordinator Gemma Nicholson (centre) handing the tickets to Rob Holt (left) who has recently completed 100 hrs volunteering and Johnathan Maw (right) who is currently on 170 hrs volunteering within the Club.
The continued support by these valuable young Volunteers is a tribute to their attitude and to the dedication of the people of Snainton CC.
J.J. has been a wonderful champion of the “V” programme and Snainton CC a terrific example of what can be achieved.
He certainly made my early days a lot easier and it has been an absolute pleasure to work with him.
Well done J.J. Gemma & Snainton CC
