Hard work and a hat-trick

I flew out to Australia on February 9, ten days ahead of the rest of the squad to acclimatise and play a bit of cricket before the World Cup kicks off in earnest on March 7.
It’s been great to have the opportunity to come out early, not only for my own personal preparations, but also to see the other girls who have been out here all winter.
I’ve been really impressed with the form the girls that have been in Australia are in – they have worked hard all winter and they’re still hungry for more cricket.
We’ve not all been together since September and so to finally get everyone together again is brilliant. The banter has already started and all the girls are on top form which bodes well for the forthcoming tournament.
One of the main reasons I came out early was to run a training camp for all the girls in Australia – nine players in total at that stage.
We were hit by bad weather for the first couple of days which meant we had to train indoors at the SCG, but after those early days it brightened up and we were able to get outside and we had some really good, hard sessions.
By the end of that week the camp had become known as ‘Lottie’s Boot Camp’! Well, it is going to take a lot of hard work to win the World Cup and I think they now know I mean business.
On Saturday the rest of the squad and management arrived, not looking their best I have to say, after their 24 hour flight. They landed at 6.30am and had to stay awake all day to help combat the jet lag. By the end of the day there were some very crabby individuals!
On Sunday I played my first proper game of cricket since September. I was playing for Gordon CC against Sydney CC and it was great to see some of the England girls come out and support us.
It had rained overnight which meant the game didn’t start until 3.30pm and was reduced to 25 overs a side as a result. We posted 95 on a slow, wet wicket. Sydney knocked them off in the last over with nine wickets down. The highlight though was my hat-trick in the penultimate over!
On Monday we’ve got our first training session as a full squad which I’m really excited about. We’re now reaching the point where all this hard work is going to be put into practise and we’re going to ensure it pays off. I can’t wait to get cracking.
