Time to get together
Posted in England Women
On Saturday February 21 the whole team met up in Sydney for our pre-world cup training camp. The girls who had been playing out here already got the chance to play one last club game whilst the new ones got the chance to get used to the different weather conditions (well being in the sun and not the snow!).
The Monday was our first team training session and everyone was excited to be outside and having the whole team together again and it was good to see that no one has changed with all the banter still there! With each day our training intensity increased slightly so we were ready for our game against the New South Wales Breakers on Friday. Even though half of the Breakers are in the Aussie team so weren’t playing they still put a decent side out.
Turning up at the ground we thought we were back in England as there was some drizzle around. The Breakers won the toss and chose to bat first and all I can say is I’m glad I wasn’t facing Nunny (Katherine Brunt) as she was an angry child and came steaming in with bouncers and everything really but the kitchen sink!
We took early wickets and every bowler that came on hit their areas, built pressure and took wickets regularly. We bowled them out for 99 which was a great team effort in our first game on tour.
Squirt (Sarah Taylor) and Shaggy (Caroline Atkins) were back opening and set off well taking the score to 50 off the first 12 overs. They punished the no-ball which provided us with a free hit and in the end they both retired when the score was on 59 to give a few of the other batters a go. We finished the game in the 30th over which was a very pleasing day but we still have things to build on.
We are now excited by a couple of training sessions before playing Australia on Monday March 1 in a warm-up game to see where we are at before starting the real cricket.
