We are World Champions!

Posted in England Women

So we’ve won the ICC Women’s World Cup and we’re all now back in England with our heads still swimming and absolutely shattered.

It hasn’t quite sunk in for me or the players yet that they are World Champions! The best in the world at what they do – what an achievement.

We landed on Tuesday morning at 6.30am to a police escort and were fast-tracked through arrivals to meet the awaiting press before heading off to Lord’s and the BBC.

I went with Lottie, Claire Taylor and Clare Connor to BBC to do a live into BBC Breakfast TV, Radio 5Live and then a pre-rec for the News Channel. Once at Lord’s, after our stint at BBC we managed a quick bacon butty and then it was over to the MCC for more media work!

There were more than 10 TV crews waiting for the players as well as a dozen or so written journalists – something they have never experienced before.

After that it was more photo shoots followed by a reception with Andy Burnham, Secretary of State, and Gerry Sutcliffe, Minister for Sport. It was such a lovely welcome back for us all and we all really appreciated the support that we received.

Even Paul Costelloe, who designed our beautiful suits, managed to swing by to the reception and it was lovely to see him, we were just sorry that we were still in our tracksuits and not our suits after the flight.

That afternoon I returned home and got through my hundreds (literally) of emails that I had received whilst on the flight! I eventually got to bed and managed to sleep through until the phone started again this morning!

We’ve managed to secure some really good slots on prime time TV as well as cover most regional requests so we’re all really happy.

After the final on Sunday night after a tense couple of hours watching the final runs being hit it all kicked off for me and both my Australian phone and English mobile were ringing non-stop! We managed to cover the major broadcast channels as well as do a couple of live interviews and press conferences before the celebrations really started!

We all met in the bar at the hotel for a celebratory drink (my tipple of choice rather randomly being a Bloody Mary!) before some of us headed out to dance the night away! I was one of the earlier ones back by all accounts as I had an early start organising a photo shoot with the players and the Trophy in the harbour the next morning.

That was followed by ICC media commitments before returning to pack. We managed to do a couple of blogs before leaving for the airport and getting on the 24 hour flight home.

And now it’s all over. The requests keep coming in and we keep fulfilling them. I’m hoping to have a week off – today is my 42nd day on the trot and I am absolutely shattered, but to see all the players finally getting the coverage they deserve just shows that the hard work is starting to pay off and it’s all been worth it.
