Win or bust in Hobart

Posted in England Lions

We need to win in Hobart tomorrow or our hopes of winning the one-day series against Australia A is over.

We are two nil down with three to play so nothing but a win will do. We need to forget the previous two results and be positive.

The cricket since we arrived in Australia has been very tough. We started with three warm-up games in Melbourne against a strong Victoria side who beat us 3-0.

We wanted to win the games but it was more important to get time in the middle. We just wanted to get people out on the field having a bowl and a hit.

Some of our players had not picked up a bat since September which is in contrast to the players over here who are at the end of their summer.

We then moved to Hobart for three one-dayers against the Australia A side. They have a very strong squad which is full of international experience.

They have played the better cricket and deserve to be 2-0 up.

In the first match we were always behind the game despite Varun Chopra’s excellent hundred. He played really solidly and got us up to a decent total but it was not enough.

Our bowlers did brilliantly to give us a chance with two wickets towards the end but we were never really in it and they won by seven wickets.

I felt good with the bat in the last match but we need to get things right in Hobart on Friday otherwise the one-day series will be over

We made a great start in the second game when Stuart Meaker got Aaron Finch with the first ball of the match.

Unfortunately we could not capitalise and they piled on the runs. They batted exceptionally well and set us 316 which proved too many.

When we batted we lost wickets at crucial times and could not get any partnerships going. The Australia side bowled well too and we finished well short.

I was pleased to make 79 off 87 balls. I felt in pretty good touch despite the wicket here in Hobart being quite slow. I struggled to get going in the first game but was better last time out. Hopefully I can get some runs in a win on Friday.

I’m enjoying being in Hobart which is a lovely place. It’s very picturesque, especially the waterfront, which is a short walk from our hotel. The weather is a bit like our summers in England. It’s really warm one day and then cold the next.
