England's record chase: the stats

Joe Root is congratulated by Ben Stokes after reaching his century against the West Indies

It was a night to remember in Barbados as records tumbled and England raced to an impressive victory over the West Indies.

With a home World Cup on the horizon this summer, a win in their first ODI of 2019 was the perfect way for England to continue their march towards the tournament.

Eoin Morgan's side smashed both team and individual records as they chased down 361 for victory.

The records

  • This was England’s highest ever successful ODI chase
  • The highest ever ODI chase by an away side
  • It was also the fourth highest successful ODI chase in history
  • For the eighth occasion since the 2015 World Cup, two batsmen reached three figures in the same innings for England

Joe Root scored his third century in nine days to all but guide England over the line and in doing so wrote himself into the record books once again:

  • He became the fastest England batsman to reach 5,000 ODI runs
  • Root is the fourth Englishman to reach 5,000 ODI runs
  • The fourth fastest batsman ever to reach 5,000 ODI runs, behind only Hashim Amla, Sir Vivian Richards and Virat Kohli
  • Root became only the second player to score three ODI hundreds against the West Indies in the West Indies

Jason Roy led from the front at Kensington Oval with a blistering hundred. This was his seventh ODI century and, remarkably, he has now brought up three of these with a maximum:

West Indies also rewrote the record books on an incredible day as their batsmen fired them past 350 after they won the toss and chose to bat:

  • Chris Gayle hit his hundredth international six against England
  • Gayle also became the all-time leading six hitter in international cricket – he now has 488, moving above Shahid Afridi
  • The West Indies hit a world-record 23 sixes, the most in an ODI innings
