    The contenders:

    Ben Sanderson - Northamptonshire
7 wickets in win over Glamorgan

Opening bowler Ben Sanderson helped get Northants off to a flier against Glamorgan. Rattling through three wickets in the first innings and four in the second - including the huge scalp of captain Jaques Rudolph twice - Sanderson picked up where he left off last season. Thirteen of his 30.3 overs were maidens in a game that Northants dominated from the outset.

    Darren Stevens - Kent
50 runs & 6/22 in 9 overs in win over Gloucestershire

Veteran Kent seamer Darren Stevens showed no signs of slowing down in his 21st first-class season with a match-winning contribution in the victory over Gloucestershire. Following a first-innings half-century, the 41-year-old led the way with six wickets in a blistering nine-over, new-ball spell to wrap up a dramatic win with four sessions to spare.

    James Pattinson - Nottinghamshire
89 not out & 8 wickets in win over Leicestershire

What a start to County Championship life for Australian quick James Pattinson. Nottinghamshire’s new pace ace not only took eight wickets to help his new county thrash local rivals Leicestershire, but also hit a career-high first-class score of 89 batting at eight. Welcome to the Champ, Patto!

    Rory Kleinveldt - Northamptonshire
6 wickets in match & 86 off 58 balls in win over Glamorgan

Another contender from Northants after their stunning two-day win over Glamorgan, bustling all-rounder Rory Kleinveldt made his full force felt throughout their opening fixture. He pitched in with three wickets in either innings and hit a bruising 86 off 58 balls that wouldn’t look out of place in a T20 Blast match to get Northants off to a superb start.
