BLOG: A Q&A with Ellie-Grace - from Dynamos Cricket to Wales U13s

Ellie-Grace and her mum, Michelle, talk about her amazing trajectory from Dynamos Cricket aged 8 to now representing her country Wales in the U13 setup.

What was it about Dynamos Cricket that inspired you to continue playing cricket?

I found Dynamos fun and realised that I was good at the activities we did. The coaches were great fun too and very encouraging.

What would you say to other girls who are thinking of joining Dynamos Cricket or club cricket?

I would tell them to join. I would say that it’s fun and you learn lots of new skills whilst making friends.

How does it feel to play in a team with other girls who love cricket?

My Dynamos and club team are actually mainly boys, who encouraged me and coached me too. We did have an under 11’s girls’ team who played softball for a season and won the County Cup. It was great to take part in that competition with friends that I made through Dynamos.

How have you found representing Wales, and what are you looking forwards to in the future?

It’s been a challenge playing for Wales, different pressures, but much more rewarding. I’m constantly looking to better myself and my game. I’m looking to continue being the best I can be and do myself, my club, and my country proud.

Which team will you be supporting in The Hundred this year, and who is your favourite player?

I will be supporting Welsh Fire as they are my home team. I can't wait for The Hundred to start.

Michelle, Ellie-Grace's mum, also reflects on her daughters love of the game and her rise.

What were your thoughts about the Dynamos programme when Ellie was participating?

I thought the Dynamos programme was brilliant, the kids really seemed to have fun and each activity develops new skills in a way they don’t realise. Ellie has tried a lot of after school activities but took to cricket really quickly.

What developments did you see to Ellie’s personal skills as a result of participating in Dynamos?

Confidence was the biggest development. Realising she was good at something gave her such a boost. She’s also developed being more and more competitive, which in turn has taught her to be resilient too, when things don't work out the way she wants.

Why would you recommend Dynamos to other parents?

I recommend it because it’s something fun to do whilst learning new things. They get to meet a lot of new friends so develops social skills as well as sport skills and exercise.

When did you realise Ellie could pursue a higher level of cricket? How have you found that journey?

I didn’t realise how good she was, as my knowledge of cricket wasn’t great but her Dynamo and U11’s coach said that she was really good and had potential. I found that she was getting more and more competitive to do better and the opportunity came for her to join the pathway. She does still struggle with confidence when things don’t quite go to plan and I find it hard to watch her go through that, but support her the best I can. She always seems to bounce back and come back stronger through hard work and determination.

Dynamos Cricket is the perfect introduction for kids aged 8-11 who are new to cricket. The programme is available over the summer holidays - click here to find out your nearest club.
