England Under-19s opener Harry Brook eclipsed Nick Compton as Yorkshire secured the first trophy of the county cricket season by beating Middlesex at Headingley in the final of the Second XI Trophy on Thursday night.
Brook, a right-hander from Ilkley who toured India with England’s Under-19s last winter and is expected to retain his place for this summer’s home series against the same opposition, continued his prolific form in the competition with 112 from 103 balls.
Ryan Gibson and captain Will Rhodes chipped in with rapid half centuries, and Middlesex were set a tough target of 279 off 38 overs under the DLS Method after a rain interruption.
Compton did his best with 57 off 43 balls, but fell to 20-year-old all-rounder Jordan Thompson.
And Jack Shutt, a 19-year-old off-spinner from Barnsley, made short work of the lower order with four for 19, as Yorkshire secured a comfortable 88-run win.
