Young Surrey offspinner Amar Virdi will practise with the England Lions squad before and during their three-day match against the senior South Africa tourists that starts in Worcester on Thursday.
Virdi, who turns 19 next month, recently made his Specsavers County Championship debut for Surrey, after signing a professional contract with the club last winter.
He impressed for England Under-19s last summer, taking five for 77 on his debut against Sri Lanka A at Fenner’s, and was invited to bowl at the senior England team in the nets before the Investec Test against Pakistan at the Kia Oval.
Virdi will join Mason Crane, the Hampshire leg-spinner who is set to make his Lions debut at Worcester after making two T20 International appearances in the NatWest series against South Africa – both of them working with the ECB’s spin-bowling lead Peter Such and also Saqlain Mushtaq, the former Pakistan bowler who is working with spinners on the Performance Pathway in his consultancy role.
“Amar isn’t an official member of the Lions squad and won’t be considered for selection against South Africa, but this is a good opportunity for him to gain some experience in the Lions environment,” said Such.
