The champions hammered Yorkshire by a whopping 376 runs to secure the remarkable feat of going unbeaten all season. Essex's 10th win out of 14 was perhaps their most dominant as they swept the visitors aside in dismissive fashion. Div 2 champions in 2016, unbeaten Div 1 champions in 2017, what on earth will the awesome Eagles do in 2018?!
PEARS IN PARADISE
They needed just two more bowling points to secure Division One status next season, but events 72 miles away at Grace Road sealed Worcestershire’s progress in the end. Fellow promotion-chasers Northants were bowled out for 202 sealing the Pears’ fifth promotion in 11 years under Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes. Welcome back to the top tier!
THE KING BOWS OUT
Kumar Sangakkara’s final summer of first-class cricket ended fittingly with an unbeaten 35 in Surrey’s clash for second place at Lancashire. The Sri Lanka great finished the season top of the runs chart with a staggering 1,491 runs at a frankly ludicrous average of 106.5, including eight centuries in just 10 matches. How we will all miss him.
ON THE PLANE
England released their 16-man Ashes squad for this winter’s tour with two County Championship stars receiving their first Test call-ups. Surrey wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes and Somerset seam bowler Craig Overton have both been rewarded for excellent summers with a seat on the plane. Go well lads!
READ ALL ABOUT IT
What a cricketer Chris Read is. After 20 years at the top of his game, the Nottinghamshire stalwart bowed out with a brilliant century in his final match. The promotion-chasers were in big trouble at 65/5 when he joined fellow centurion Billy Root at the crease but they finished on a mammoth 477. A draw’s enough to secure Notts' Div One progression and thanks to their evergreen skipper, that’s looking ever more likely.
