Taking the momentum into the interval is oft-referred-to commentary parlance, when teams nick a goal in the 45th minute or grab a wicket on the stroke of lunch.
The happier dressing room is almost certainly occupied by those in possession of said “momentum”.
With 19 overs of the NatWest T20 Blast final bowled, Notts Outlaws were handily placed on 167-4, with seamer Olly Stone set to bowl the final six balls. The momentum was in the balance.
Balls one and two of the final over were uneventful, a Jeetan Patel single brought Outlaws captain Dan Christian on strike and he collected a brace to third-man. The next four balls were huge.
19.3 Stone to Christian, FOUR, a lofted square drive, almost goes all the way – one-bounce four to deep backward point.
19.4 Stone to Christian, SIX, short and wide, Christian slashes it into the crowd!
19.5 Stone to Christian, SIX, even bigger!
19.6 Stone to Christian, FOUR, full, drilled square, it flies for four.
That concluding over brought 23 runs – 22 of them from the bat of Christian – giving the Outlaws serious momentum heading into the break.
They lifted the trophy later that night, having won the match by 22 runs.
