Number five - A last ball thriller at Wantage Road
Northamptonshire Steelbacks are a formidable side at home, a close-knit group of cricketers happy to take on all comers. Two Blast trophies in the cabinet from recent summers point to clear evidence of a winning formula.
Birmingham Bears travelled to Wantage Road on August 1 as a side in transition, hoping to take down the defending champions in their own back yard.
At the halfway stage the Bears had 172 on the board, a workable total but well within range of Northants’ big hitters. They would need to bowl and field extremely well.
With six balls left it was anyone’s match, 13 required, the experienced Steelbacks skipper Alex Wakely 45 not out and a 20-year-old rookie in Aaron Thomason to bowl the final over.
The match went to the final ball.
