Day in focus: England make steady start in Adelaide

Dawid Malan scored 63 for England in Adelaide

England finished the first day of their day-night tour match against a Cricket Australia XI on 278/8 at the Adelaide Oval.

Dawid Malan top scored for the tourists with 63 before being dismissed with the final ball of the day, while opener Mark Stoneman (61) and captain Joe Root (58) also contributed half-centuries.

England lost four wickets under the lights in the final session while spin bowler Daniel Fallins ended with four wickets for CA XI.

The fixture is England's second warm-up match of the Ashes tour, with the team set to play a pink ball Test at the Adelaide Oval starting on December 2.

Team News and Toss

England named their team on Tuesday with Stuart Broad, Gary Ballance, Ben Foakes and Moeen Ali missing out from the touring squad.

Cricket Australia XI won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Story of the Day

For the second time in the tour, opener Alastair Cook was removed cheaply as he edged behind for 15 off Jackson Coleman.

Stoneman and James Vince built a solid partnership in response before the Hampshire batsman was bowled by Fallins for 33.

After the lunch break, Stoneman scored his second half-century of the tour while Root also passed the fifty mark.

Root was eventually removed by Fallins for 58 before Stoneman also departed to the spinner for 61.

England went in on 180/4 at dinner as the lights came on for the evening session.

Malan looked composed as he scored his second fifty of the tour before being dismissed for 63 with the last ball of the day.

The Three Lions lost four wickets in the final session, with three falling for just seven runs in the closing stages.
