Anya Shrubsole: Test is very evenly poised

Anya Shrubsole has praised the effort of her England teammates after they took five wickets on day two of the Women's Ashes Test at the North Sydney Oval.

Anya Shrubsole has praised the effort of her England teammates after they took five wickets on day two at the North Sydney Oval to leave Australia 177/5, 103 runs behind their own total of 280.

It was a day notable for England’s collective strength of mind and teamwork but it wasn’t without its standout performers, 18-year-old Sophie Ecclestone impressing with two for 51 from 17 overs, Laura Marsh watertight at the other end and Sarah Taylor taking an excellent catch behind the stumps.

“It’s been a good day all round and we’ve got to make sure we come out really hard in the morning.”

“I think the game is very evenly poised,” said Shrubsole.

“It’s been a hard day’s Test cricket on a pitch that’s not particularly easy to score on but at the same time isn’t particularly easy to take wickets on.

“We stuck to it really well today,” she continued.

“All of the bowlers did their job exceptionally well, and Sophie Ecclestone did brilliantly to take her maiden Test wickets.

“It’s been a good day all round and we’ve got to make sure we come out really hard in the morning.”

On a slow track England had to work hard to dry up the runs before using that pressure to then take wickets, in a style not dissimilar to how they’d approach a limited-overs bowling effort.

It was something they did well, squeezing Australia’s opening batters before taking three for 13 in 13 overs.

“It’s definitely more about wickets through pressure than it is blasting teams out with a lot of seam, swing or spin,” said Shrubsole.

“That’s one of the things that we did really well today, every bowler came on and nailed their job. Laura Marsh bowled brilliantly and fully deserved her wicket.

“I think both Laura and Sophie would admit that their first wickets didn’t come from the best balls they bowled but they were the results of pressure and the batters trying to get that release shot.

“It is one of those pitches and we know that we’ve just got to keep plugging away – 100 runs is a lot to get on this pitch.”

“I’m not sure there’s much we could have done differently today. We fielded outstandingly, took a couple of good catches and stopped loads on the ground.

“We’ve got to repeat that tomorrow.”

The England vice-captain had further words of praise for Ecclestone, complimenting her character as well as her performance on the pitch: “To make your Test match debut at 18 is pretty special.

“Nothing seems to get Soph too excited but equally nothing phases her, which is one of the amazing things about her.

“I’m sure she’ll feel it tomorrow, she won’t be used to being in the field for that long but she’s got a couple of wickets and bowled brilliantly today.

    “It’s a day I’m sure she’ll never forget.”

For Shrubsole herself the day started with her scoring 20, her highest Test score, and helping to add 45 useful runs for the last three wickets.

“It was an eventful innings! It’s always eventful when I bat.

“There were plenty of play-and-misses, I couldn’t get bat on ball for a while, but it was important that we added as many as we could this morning.

“It’s vital to get runs down the order and today it was another 40-odd on the board on a pitch that’s hard to score on. Every run counts.”

With the ball she was as tidy and probing as ever, recording figures of 1 for 21 from 13 overs and picking up the wicket of Elyse Villani courtesy of a fine catch by wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor.

It was, she says, a catch to remember: “It was an amazing catch from Sarah. We see her do that kind of thing all the time – and there are a fair few videos around of her doing stuff like that in matches before.

“She works really hard at it and it adds something extra when your keeper can take chances like that standing up.”

A full scorecard is available throughout the match.
