Nick Gubbins top scored as England Lions took on the BBL champions Perth Scorchers
Nick Gubbins showed his mettle in front of a parochial Perth crowd with a gutsy half century against a fired-up Mitchell Johnson which took England Lions tantalisingly close to a second win in three days against the Perth Scorchers
Yorkshire’s David Willey thumped 37 from 24 balls hitting six of his seven boundaries from consecutive deliveries
“I loved it," said Gubbins. "You watch him on the TV and wonder what it’s going to be like facing him. That’s exactly the sort of test we all want when we come on tour with the Lions.”
“He was definitely switched on. He smacked me in the ribs from the first ball I faced, which was a nice little war wound to take with me. I’m not sure if he had a ‘tash or a little beard, but he was definitely scowling and saying a few words."
"I advised him to take Johnson for a single down to third man – but Woody was more interested in mid-on and mid-off being up inside the circle, and the next thing I knew he’d whacked it over long on into the stand."
“Woody’s bowling fast, really fast. He came back for the 15th over I think, took a wicket and then had a leg gully. He was bowling pretty hairy stuff. It was a funny pitch, because some balls didn’t go through, but others flew."
Lions fell six runs short – to the delight of a five-figure crowd who had been invited to attend the second match at the New Perth Stadium. The decider in the three-match T20 series against the BBL champions is at the Murdoch University ground on Friday
