England Women A tour of Australia four-day match report: Hosts seal final-over win

England Women A ended their tour of Australia with a final-over defeat in an entertaining four-day match at Cricket Central, Sydney with the scorecard here.

A century to Charli Knott and a declaration set up an entertaining final afternoon.

Knott’s 123 and half-centuries for Rachel Trenaman (76) and Nicole Faltum (54) helped Australia A to 353-6 (dec).

The declaration set England a target of 290 in the final two sessions and the momentum switched throughout the afternoon.

At 181-2 with around an hour remaining a draw looked likely, before Hollie Armitage (75) and Alice Capsey (55) kept the tourists’ hopes of victory alive.

Capsey was then stumped by Maitlan Brown and off-spinner Lilly Mills held on to a return catch to remove the dangerous Armitage.

Paige Scholfield’s 24-ball 39 kept England in a promising position but she was caught off the bowling of Tess Flintoff and England lost 3-3 in three overs and defended with Issy Wong and Georgia Davis in to conclude the remaining overs.

In the penultimate over of the day, Wong was run out to leave England A nine down with one Knott over remaining. Knott then bowled Davis sealing a 25-run win.

Australia captain Knott’s second-innings century followed her 52 in the first innings. Trenaman also impressed, scoring 77 and 76, while Faltum also scored two half-centuries, 52 before her 54 on Tuesday.

For England A, Capsey enjoyed her first red-ball match, with her fourth day 55 following her 108 earlier in the match, while Scholfield also showed her class, with Tuesday’s contribution following her first-innings 164.

The result means a well-contested tour ends with England sealing the rain-affected T20 series 1-0, the hosts taking the 50-over series 2-1 and the red ball match.
