From the U19 World Cup to full international honours

A look back at players who have featured at U19 World Cups and played full international cricket for England

2018

While England’s 2018 squad may contain numerous future internationals, Tom Banton is the one who’s made the step up so far, making his IT20 debut against New Zealand.

The Somerset smasher had an incredible Vitality Blast in 2019 and is now one of the most sought-after signings on the T20 franchise circuit.

2016

Two members of England’s squad have gone on to play Test cricket, while a third made his IT20 bow this winter.

Sam Curran and Mason Crane are those capped in five-day cricket, with Saqib Mahmood getting his first England action in New Zealand in November.

2014

England Test cap number 694, Dominic Sibley joined Ben Duckett in the England squad for the 2014 tournament – the only two to have currently gained full international honours.

2012

Ben Duckett made his first of two U19 World Cup appearances in 2012, joined by fellow future Test players Ben Foakes and Craig Overton. Reece Topley was also part of the England squad and has gone on to wear the Three Lions 16 times in white-ball cricket.

2010

Perhaps England’s golden U19 generation, the 2010 World Cup squad featured Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, James Vince and Danny Briggs.

The first four were part of the 2019 World Cup triumph, while Briggs has played a handful of ODIs and IT20s.

2008

Two members of England’s 2019 World Cup squad were present in 2008’s U19 edition in the form of Chris Woakes and Liam Dawson. James Taylor, now a National Selector, and seamers Steven Finn and Stuart Meaker have also been capped by England.

2006

Eoin Morgan captaining Ireland and was the second-highest run scorer in the tournament. The current England white-ball skipper remains the leading runscorer in U19 Cricket World Cup history with 606 runs.

For England, only Moeen Ali and Mark Stoneman went on to win full international honours, with the former part of Morgan’s World Cup-winning squad in 2019.

2004

Sir Alastair Cook, Ravi Bopara, Liam Plunkett, Luke Wright and Steve Davies were part of the squad for the tournament in Bangladesh.

England’s record ODI cap holder and World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan was Ireland’s leading run-scorer in the tournament.

2002

A fresh-faced Tim Bresnan is the highest profile future England star to play in the 2002 World Cup, making his bow as a 16-year-old and going on to return in 2004.

Nick Compton and Samit Patel also played in the squad, coached by Paul Farbrace.

2000

Possibly England’s most stylish ever batsman, Ian Bell was part of England’s squad in 2000. His long-term Warwickshire teammate and fellow Ashes winner Jonathan Trott was also at the tournament, but playing for South Africa.

Michael Carberry and Tim Murtagh were the two other members of the England squad to play international cricket in the future, although Gary Pratt certainly played a starring role as a substitute in the 2005 Ashes…

1998

England’s only triumph at the U19 World Cup came with a teenage Owais Shah at the helm – one of five future England stars in the squad. Graeme Swann was part of the victorious squad, as were Rob Key, Chris Schofield and Paul Franks, while Michael Lumb and Ed Joyce played for South Africa and Ireland respectively.

1988

The squads list for 1988 Youth Cricket World Cup reads like a who’s who of anyone who’s anyone from Test and ODI cricket in the late 1990s.

In the England squad alone, nine went on to play international cricket and two captained the Test team. Michael Atherton was skipper for the tournament, in which England lost to eventual winners Australia in the semi-finals, with a supporting cast that included Nasser Hussain.

Mark Alleyne, Martin Bicknell, Simon Brown, Warren Hegg, Chris Lewis, Peter Martin and Mark Ramprakash were the other to go on to win full England caps, while Andy Caddick turned out for his native New Zealand and Alan Mullally represented Australia.
