Schools Cricket

School cricket plays a vital role in helping us make cricket more widely accessible to young people. It provides a platform for children aged 5+ to make friends, learn new skills and develop their fundamental movement skills.

Primary School Cricket

The ECB has made a long-term commitment to primary school cricket through a multi-year agreement with our charity partner, Chance to Shine.

Working in partnership with local Recreational Cricket Boards (RCBs), the charity organises and administers cricket and education sessions that are delivered by local coaches (employed by the local RCB) in over 25% of primary schools across England and Wales each year.

Chance to Shine

Chance to Shine is a national charity that aims to give all children the opportunity to play, learn and develop through cricket.

They work to develop the personal, social and physical skills of the 600,000 children that Chance to Shine work with every year.

SEND and ALN School Cricket

The ECB has made a long-term commitment to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) & Additional Learning Needs (ALN) School Cricket through a multi-year agreement with our charity partner, Lord’s Taverners.

Working in partnership with local Recreational Cricket Boards (RCBs), the charity organises and administers cricket and education sessions that are delivered by local coaches (employed by the local RCB) across England and Wales each year.

By 2028, this programme will have offered delivery to 100% of the 1500 SEND & ALN Schools identified in the ECB’s State School Action Plan.

Lord's Taverners

Lord’s Taverners is a national cricket charity who exist to impact the lives of young people facing the challenges of inequality.

Their SEND schools programme looks to support Special and Alternative Needs schools and units with the provision of cricket coaching – with a range of adapted versions of the game, delivered by the county cricket network of experienced cricket coaches.

Secondary School Cricket

In state secondary schools, the opportunity for children to play is delivered by a combination of ECB and partner-run programmes and competitions. Click the link below to read more.

State secondary schools can also access a comprehensive softball cricket offer through the ECB’s Cricket for Teachers programme, delivered by local Recreational Cricket Boards.

Teachers are shown how to deliver fun and engaging softball cricket activities for pupils in Years 7 to 1 (ages 11-16) including the ECB’s new softball competition, Secondary Countdown Cricket. Schools are given a free high-quality softball kit bag, funded by the ECB. The programme aligns with the national curriculum and can be adapted for SEND and ALN settings.
