2009
September - Makes debut for Yorkshire in a 40-over match against Essex at Headingley, scoring 63 as an opener.
November - Named man of the series for England Under-19s on their tour of Bangladesh and goes on to play six times in the Youth World Cup in New Zealand the following year.
2010
May - Makes his First Class debut for Yorkshire against Loughborough MCCU and goes close to scoring 1,000 runs in his first full season for the county.
2011
April - Scores first Championship hundred, 160 against Sussex, a few weeks after his debut in the competition against Worcestershire at New Road.
August - Makes England Lions debut against Sri Lanka A at Scarborough and scores 66. Ends the season with 1,013 runs in the bank.
2012
February - On the Lions tour to Sri Lanka scores One-Day and First-Class centuries and later that year is named Cricket Writers Club’s Young Player of the Year.
May - Scored unbeaten century for England Lions against full West Indies side.
December - Elevated to the full Test squad and compiles a patient 73 from 229 balls in Nagpur on debut as England complete a series victory over India.
2013
May - Makes his first England century, scoring 104 against New Zealand in front of the Yorkshire faithful at Headingley.
July - Root’s first ton at Lord’s is a big one, 180, after being elevated to opener for the Ashes series win over Australia.
2014
January - After being moved down the order to six, elevated to three after Brisbane opener but then dropped for final Ashes Test in Sydney as England slump to a 5-0 defeat.
March - Makes maiden ODI hundred against the West Indies in his 25th 50-over match.
June - Scores an unbeaten double century on his return to the Test side, at Lord’s against Sri Lanka, and goes on to score 154* and 149* later in the summer against India.
2015
January - Starts the year by scoring just five in an ODI in Sydney but goes on to make 1,385 Test runs and top the ICC world rankings as England regain the Ashes. Compiles 2,228 runs across all formats.
May - Named as England’s Test vice captain, replacing Ian Bell. "He's got outstanding leadership capabilities,” says England Director of Cricket, Andrew Strauss.
September - Skippers Yorkshire as they clinch the County Championship title for the first time in 13 years with victory over Nottinghamshire.
2016
April - Top scores with 54 and takes two wickets as England are narrowly beaten in the World T20 final by the West Indies.
July - Hits career Test best 254 against Pakistan at Old Trafford.
November - Registers 11th Test hundred as England draw with India in Rajkot. Second only to Virat Kohli for runs scored in the series (491).
2017
February - Named England Test captain, taking over from Alastair Cook.
