Joe Root shortlisted for Sports Personality of the Year

Root named as one of six contenders for BBC award

England Men's batter Joe Root has been named as one of six contenders for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Root, 33, has had a bumper year in 2024 scoring 6 centuries and over 1400 runs with another Test match against New Zealand still to play.

Root has broken many records this year to become England Men's record Test run scorer, surpassing Sir Alastair Cook and also passed Cook's record for the most Test centuries by and Englishman.

He also passed the 20,000 international runs mark across all formats while moving up to 5th in the all-time list of Test run scorers.

Root is nominated alongside Jude Bellingham, Keely Hodgkinson, Luke Littler, Sarah Storey and Alex Yee.

Voting will take place during the show on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer on Tuesday, 17 December.
