I have been the Managing Director of Somerset Cricket Foundation of almost a year now, it’s been a long journey back to the game I love, but I got here eventually.
I manage the charity linked to Somerset County Cricket Club, overseeing recreational cricket with the community, schools for all ages and abilities. I support a team of fantastic coaches and managers who deliver outstanding support, motivation and programmes to over 40,000 participants annually.
Cricket first became important many years ago as a teenager, playing any sport I could access. I had a fantastic PE teacher who introduced me to the game and encouraged me to participate in club cricket at a time when there were limited opportunities. I completed at club and county level at the time but once I started University, the opportunities to play disappeared and I unfortunately had to stop.
I have always seen the value and impact that sport can have on community cohesion, physical and mental health throughout my career. I qualified as a youth and community worker and as a practitioner and trainer in this sector I had to privilege of training over 1000 coaches in youth work skills within the Premier League, English Football League and sports partnerships.
I recognised then that sports coaches had enormous ability to enable individuals to grow; with charities linked to professional clubs being able to provide incredibly impactful work through the power of the badge and professional branding.
Over the last 10 years I worked for a professional football club running their charity but when the opportunity came to apply to do the same within cricket I jumped at the chance which has led me to the role I now hold which provides the same provision but through the power of cricket for good.
I am proudest about the work of Somerset Cricket Foundation impact they make to recreational cricket whether supporting clubs and leagues or direct coaching and delivery. Seeing the powerfully positive changes recreational cricket makes to children and families of all ages, makes me very proud.
I am driven to improve the opportunities for everyone to participate in cricket in whatever way someone wants to; as a player, coach, official, supporter or the hundreds of ways we can get involved. I want to make sure that no-one is left unable to take part because opportunities are not available, or barriers to participation block their way or turn them to other sports which means they miss out on the power of cricket to change lives.
Look beyond the immediate, cricket is so much more than just the starting 11, there are careers across the game available to you on and off the field. Be part of making cricket the most inclusive sport.
