11 moments you need to relive from 2018

What a year it was. 

From making and breaking records to landmark retirements and marriage proposals, here are 11 great moments – inside and outside the boundary rope – from the summer of 2018. 

Cook’s swansong

The final Test of the 2018 summer belonged to Sir Alastair Cook. If you're looking for a fairytale ending to a career, this was it.

The scene was set as England's former captain and all-time leading Test run scorer headed to the Oval for his last international match.

What transpired matched the occasion in every way. On day four, Chef brought up his 33rd Test century to say goodbye in perfect fashion. 

Anderson dislodges McGrath

In the same match that his long-time team-mate and close friend departed the international stage, Jimmy Anderson made history of his own. 

Anderson ensured a perfect Hollywood ending when he claimed his 564th wicket to overtake Glenn McGrath and become the most prolific pace bowler of all time in Test cricket. 

Following on from Cook's farewell century the day before, Anderson's match-winning wicket was the icing on the cake of a truly memorable match and 4-1 series victory. 

Romance in the stands

Love was in the air at Lord’s this summer!

One plucky spectator asked his partner for her hand in marriage during the Royal London ODI against India and as the young man went down on one knee the decision was pending.

It wasn’t long before his now fiancée said yes and the crowds watching on the big screen joined in to ensure it was a moment to remember.

Luke Wright to the rescue

Sussex's Luke Wright was the undisputed crowd hero at Vitality Blast Finals Day as he rescued and returned a beach ball to a packed and delighted Hollies Stand. According to the man himself, the accompanying cheers were the loudest he had received in his career to date. 

Sarah Taylor's lightning hands 

We’re used to expecting the outrageous when it comes to Sarah Taylor and her glove-work. Last summer proved no different.

Taylor's first stumping came in the opening ODI against South Africa, taking the ball down the leg-side before throwing her hand back in a flash to whip off the bails.

Jordan's incredible catch

In the third Vitality International Twenty20 at Bristol, Chris Jordan added another stunning catch to his collection.

Lokesh Rahul hit high and far out to long-on and as the ball dropped out of the sky it was met by the full-length dive of Jordan, who held on to take the catch.

Roy and Overton combine

From the sublime to the simple in one dismissal. Jason Roy and Craig Overton combined in some style to dismiss centurion Shaun Marsh at the Emirates Riverside.

Roy showed great presence of mind after taking the initial catch to throw the ball up to his teammate as his momentum carried him over the rope, letting Overton take the simplest of chances.

World records – part 1

Not content with breaking the record for the highest ODI team total in August 2016, England Men reached another level on a special day in June this year as they smashed their own record against Australia at Trent Bridge.

Striking 62 boundaries, England posted 481-6 to pass their previous best by 37 runs.

Trent Bridge wasn't the only setting for record-breaking exploits as England Women capped off a tremendous two-day spell with a run-fest of their own at Taunton.

England now hold the record for the highest team total in International Women’s Twenty20 cricket after amassing 250-3 against South Africa, breaking the previous record by 34 runs.

Buttler runs out Paine

Jos Buttler’s sublime century to lead England to victory and a 5-0 whitewash against Australia at Old Trafford rightly stole the headlines but he wowed the crowds in the field with this stunning run-out. Scampering to midwicket Buttler picked up, turned and while falling to the ground threw down the stumps in the blink of an eye!

Rashid bowls Kohli

If you're drawing up a list of contenders for delivery of the year, Adil Rashid will likely figure for this wonder ball to Virat Kohli in the third ODI. The fizzing leg spinner drifted towards leg before spinning sharply back to take the top of off-stump and dismiss the visibly surprised India captain.
