The ECB understands the continued risk that corruption poses to cricket. The focus of the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is the prevention of corruption in domestic cricket, with emphasis on the following:
- Education
- Providing guidance and support
- Collaboration and working relationships with the Professional Cricketers Association (PCA) and other key stakeholders such as all professional cricket teams (men’s and women’s) and the pathway structure, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and other Cricket Boards
The following video has been made in collaboration with the PCA and the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA), and forms a key part of participant education. It covers the three main risk areas of the Anti-Corruption Code:
- Betting on Cricket
- Misuse of Inside Information
- Fixing
ECB Anti-Corruption Officials each work with several professional men’s and women’s teams. Their main role is to support the participants, provide advice and guidance, and to act as a point of contact if players are concerned about any Anti-Corruption related matters.
The ACU takes breaches of the code very seriously and will fairly and robustly investigate such breaches. In 2012, Mervyn Westfield was banned from cricket after partaking in spot-fixing in a domestic match. Westfield agreed to be interviewed, to talk about the impact of his actions on his career and life.
