Battle of the bowlers

Whilst a lot of the focus may be on big-hitting with the bat, the bowlers have played an important role too. Whether it’s getting a wicket or a dot ball, they can decide the outcome of a match. We take a look at a few who have impressed so far.

Sammy-Jo Johnson:

Leading the way with the most wickets in the competition so far, Johnson has already got 12 wickets from 95 deliveries. She has been just as impressive with the bat and has been a large reason the Rockets have gotten themselves back into the top three hunt. Here’s a clip of a wicket against the London Spirit.

Adil Rashid:

With 10 wickets, England star Rashid leads the way on the men’s half of the competition. His ability to change up the types of deliveries he bowls makes it tough for a batter to ever feel comfortable with him bowling at the other end.

Tash Farrant:

The Oval Invincibles’ bowler has been key for her side in taking 11 wickets, the nearest wicket-taker in the team being captain Dane van Niekerk with six. The England star has caused issues with her left-arm fast bowling so far in the competition and may continue to do so for her side.

Marchant de Lange:

It would be impossible to talk about impressive bowlers and not mention the performance of de Lange in his time at The Hundred. He was drafted in for the Trent Rockets as a temporary replacement for Wahab Riaz due to visa issues and self isolation, but the South-African made a real impact. He took the first ever Hundred five-wicket haul and his pace meant he was to be feared by any batter who came in to face him.

Linsey Smith:

The slow left-arm spinner not only ranks highly in the wicket-taking leaderboards, currently fourth with seven wickets, she has become a bowler that is frustrating to face with the bat. Her bowling has restricted runs from the batters at the crease, ranking the best for bowling economy with 3.94 per block of five. Her impressive displays may well put her back into the England reckoning going forward.

Adam Milne:

The Birmingham Phoenix bowler is the best for economy on the men’s half of the competition and ranks fourth for wickets taken with seven from 85 deliveries bowled. Here’s a clip of his fantastic return catch against the London Spirit.

These are just a handful of bowlers who have had an impact so far and many more can still write themselves into The Hundred history books as we move towards the final group stage matches...
