Bairstow brilliance lights up run-fest at Headingley

Jonny Bairstow plundered a devastating 174 as Yorkshire breezed past Durham while Wantage Road threw up a tie!

Jonny Bairstow stole the show with a scintillating 174 on Wednesday as Yorkshire made it back-to-back wins and Northants and Worcestershire shared the spoils in a Wantage Road thriller.

Yorkshire beat Durham by six wickets

Middlesex beat Hampshire by 87 runs (D/L)

Northants v Worcestershire MATCH TIED

Bair mauls Durham bowlers

Brilliant, brutal, belligerent, Bairstow. Jonny was in ravenous mood at Headingley, hitting a monstrous 174 as Yorkshire made light work of hunting down Durham's 335. The wicketkeeper batsman, who is set to link up with England for their two-match series with Ireland, smashed it to all parts, clearing the rope seven times. Tim Bresnan called it "probably the best one day innings I've seen." All that and Bairstow can't even nail down a regular place in England's side! Blessed with riches, we certainly are.

Gubbins gives way to Rojo Show

Toby Roland-Jones is at the peak of his powers, and he was the difference for Middlesex at the Ageas Bowl on Wednesday night. After Nick Gubbins’ superb century helped the visitors set a competitive 295 from 50 overs, RoJo took four for ten from his opening seven-over spell to leave the chase in disarray. Despite a nuggety fifth-wicket partnership from George Bailey and Sean Ervine, the hosts never got back into it. As an aside, Middlesex's wealth of seam bowling options goes on and on - Tom Helm has come into the side and looked distinctly sharp.

Newton's force not quite irresistible in Wantage Road nailbiter

Worcestershire’s up-and-down innings of 277 for nine, given respectability by Daryl Mitchell (75), Ben Cox, (82), and Ed Barnard (40*) didn't look quite enough. That was especially true with Rob Newton playing some glorious, sweetly struck, cover drives on his way to 106. However, Northants' smooth path to victory became distinctly rocky after Newton holed out and captain Alex Wakely was run out by Adam Rossington. Probably feeling guilty after calling his captain through for the run-out, Rossington took the lion's share of the strike and finished unbeaten on 63. He hit the last over for 13 to tie the game in thrilling finish.
