Beyond the Boundary: how Initial and the ECB are helping to normalise periods in sport

Sian Walkling, Head of Marketing for Initial Washroom Hygiene UK and Ireland, shares her thoughts on how the partnership between the ECB and Initial is bringing period dignity to the world of sport.

For far too long, periods have often been a quiet hurdle for girls and women in sports to overcome each month. From school pitches to professional arenas, the unspoken worries about when a period is going to start, the fear of leaks, the thought of being caught unawares without period products to hand or simply the discomfort of discussing menstruation, have silently sidelined many talented athletes. The good news is that I truly believe the ‘period’ playing field is finally changing.

Over the past two years, our partnership has made some monumental strides in delivering period products, raising awareness and fostering discussion at recreational cricket and sports clubs across the UK.  This is not just about providing products; it is about allowing open conversations and creating truly welcoming environments where periods never stop someone from joining in.

The hidden problem: period shame in sport

The impact of period shame on sports participation is clear, and it’s something I feel needs to be addressed. Studies consistently show that menstruation can be a significant factor in why young girls and women step away from sport. For instance, research indicates that 37% of girls avoid school sports due to their periods. Furthermore, a staggering 69% of female football players feel their clubs do not educate them sufficiently about their menstrual cycle.

This is not just an elite athlete's dilemma. At the grassroots level, the absence of period products, inadequate facilities, and the constant fear of leaks or embarrassment can create a quiet storm of anxiety, causing many to simply drop out. Imagine missing a crucial catch or a game-winning goal because you are consumed by period worries. This is the very real, often overlooked, challenge many females face.

Initial's great solution: an In Cubicle Period Dignity Dispenser

At Initial, we are tackling this issue head-on with our ingenious In Cubicle Period Dignity Dispenser. This discreet solution is designed to provide free and easy access to essential period products, such as pads and tampons, right inside the toilet cubicle.

The genius, in my mind, lies in accessibility: products are available precisely when and where they are needed most. Placing these vital supplies directly within the cubicle eliminates the awkwardness of having to ask for products or frantically search for a vending machine elsewhere. Our own research* has shown the overwhelming majority of those who menstruate (94%) would like to see feminine hygiene provisions supplied in the actual toilet cubicle.  After all, no girl or woman wants to be caught unawares and without access to the products they need, in the place they need them.

For the past two years, we have been supplying free of charge, In Cubicle Period Dignity Dispensers to grassroots clubs with girls’ sections, along with providing the regular servicing of period waste bins.

The ECB's promise for a welcoming cricket future

The ECB is setting a sterling example; to date, over 800 local cricket clubs with girls' teams have benefitted from the strategic partnership with Initial Washroom Hygiene, with more joining the movement every week. This widespread adoption underscores their commitment to making cricket truly "the most inclusive team sport".

Beyond the physical dispensers, the partnership also provides invaluable educational materials. These resources are crafted to normalise discussions around periods, empowering future cricketers with confidence and cultivating a more understanding environment for everyone involved in the sport, from players to coaches and parents.

More than products: building a positive period environment

While access to products is undeniably crucial, true period dignity extends much further. It’s about cultivating a culture where periods are understood, supported, and never, ever a source of shame. This includes:

  • Open conversations and education: encouraging players, coaches, and staff to engage in candid conversations about periods, share experiences, and understand how menstruation can impact performance and overall wellbeing. A perceived lack of knowledge can often hinder these vital discussions.
  • Supportive rules: implementing flexible training schedules or offering assistance for period-related discomfort, acknowledging that every athlete’s body is unique.
  • Welcoming facilities: ensuring changing rooms and washrooms are consistently clean, safe, and private, equipped with proper waste disposal options. After all, a fresh-smelling washroom speaks volumes about care and professionalism.

A call to action for all sports clubs

I believe providing easy access to period products and period waste disposal is not just "nice-to-haves"; it is a fundamental step towards gender equality and maximising female participation at every level.
