Gabi Brown - Umpire

I started umpiring around 2022 after originally playing for local Women’s Premier League teams, initially umpiring in Nottinghamshire in men’s leagues alongside women’s academy and second XI games. After progressing through the pathway I was rewarded with three trial games in the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy at the end of 2023.

I did my first full year of Women's professional cricket in 2024, standing onfield in Women’s domestic cricket and getting to be fourth umpire in the Hundred. I was also lucky enough to officiate in some of the England Women’s warm up matches and get a first taste of international standard cricket.

In 2025 I continued to build on my success of the previous year and was rewarded with appointments to every Women's Domestic Cricket Final throughout the year and also was voted the PCA Women's Umpire of the Year - These are my proudest achievements to date in cricket. During this season I stood in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, Vitality Blast, Women’s County Cup and The Hundred. I was also fortunate enough to be onfield for the entire England A v New Zealand A series which was a fantastic experience.

I still actively umpire in the men’s pathway, with the 2025 season giving me my first taste of men’s Second XI cricket along with being appointed to the Disability Premier League Final and the ECB Men’s National Club Championship Final at Lord’s.

After the 2025 season, I applied for one of the advertised vacancies in the Professional Umpire Team and became the second ever female, after Sue Redfern, to be accepted into the role. I am thoroughly looking forward to working hard over the next few years and seeing how far I can go! I never thought when I started umpiring, I’d be receiving ICC fixtures, and will be making my ODI and IT20 debuts this year.  I’m very grateful to all the developers, coaches, colleagues and all those who’ve helped support my journey.

Off the field I am a strong advocate of female officiating and as an ECB tutor, mentor and developer. I invest time in supporting other officials, delivering training, offering personalised guidance, and championing a more inclusive and confident generation of umpires, with a particular focus on Female officials.

I would encourage any women and girls to get involved in cricket, in whatever capacity as it gives you the opportunity to be part of a fantastic community and you never know where it’ll take you!
