Can Tridents recover? Toyota Disability Premier League round-up

All of the action from the first matchday of the Toyota Disability Premier League.

Defending champions Tridents will be determined to bounce back from a poor start when Week 2 of the Toyota Disability Premier League takes place in Loughborough this Sunday (5th July).

After falling to opening day defeats against both Hawks and Black Cats, the pressure is mounting for a positive result against Pirates in a re-run of last year’s final.

But Pirates will also be looking for a major improvement, after tying with Black Cats and losing by six runs to Hawks in their Week 1 fixtures.

Pirates had managed to retain most of their 2025 squad and had been widely tipped to go one step further than their runner-up placing last year – only for the fall of Luke Riley’s wicket on the last ball of their innings to deny them victory against Black Cats.

After 17-year-old Henry Golding’s outstanding knock of 74 for Black Cats, Monty McKenzie (22) and Anthony Clapham (27) had both contributed at the crease for Pirates, leaving them needing just eight runs from the final over to secure the win.

Black Cats’ Alfie Jeeves, however, had other ideas. He secured two crucial dismissals in the last six balls, first tempting Jack Murfin into a shot that Jimmy Dixon caught, before Riley was run out chasing the win at the death.

Black Cats then built on that encouraging start by claiming a four-wicket victory over Tridents, with Jimmy Dixon’s unbeaten 50 from just 53 balls supported by decent knocks from Henry Golding (18) and Elliot Brown (19).

Hawks were the major success story of Week 1, beating Tridents and Pirates by 37 runs and 6 runs respectively. Opener Gregor McKenzie (58) was in fine form against Tridents, before an all-round team effort (Ronnie Jackson 32, Callum Flynn 30, Stephen George 32, and Alex Hammond 39 not out) did the damage against Pirates.

The stage is now set for another thrilling round of Toyota Disability Premier League action, which is available to stream live on the ECB YouTube channel, and ECB app.
