County Championship Plays of the Day - April 16

The best from the final day of round one including a truly extraordinary session at Old Trafford

Three sides were toasting their first victory of the season on the final day of round one, but there was one major talking point - the incredible scenes at Old Trafford...

Scorecard: Hampshire 290 & 244 beat Worcestershire 211 & 127
Scorecard: Lancashire 158 & 73 lost to Nottinghamshire 222 & 10/4
Scorecard: Kent 64 & 153 lost Gloucestershire 110 & 108/5
Scorecard: Warwickshire 299 & 87/3 drew with Sussex 374

Welcome to Madchester

Ninety minutes, 25 runs, 12 wickets. So went a truly remarkable morning session at Old Trafford, one that saw newly-promoted Nottinghamshire win their first match back in Division One. It seemed inconceivable they'd be clinking glasses at half past noon when play got under way on Day Four. Hosts Lancashire strolled to the crease at 58/2 in their second innings, just six runs behind.

But that was before blistering spells from Jake Ball, who finished with career best match figures of 9/57, and Harry Gurney, who recorded his best ever innings figures of 6/25. Having been 49/1 at one stage, Lancashire slumped to 73 all out. Peter Moores' men needed 10 to win. Easy, right? Wrong. Notts stumbled there four down after Joe Mennie took three wickets and Graham Onions one. Astonishing.

A Wiese man says...

We had to wait four days but we finally got our first centurion of the Specsavers County Championship season - David Wiese. Sussex's South African blasted 106 off just 105 balls, featuring three sixes and 14 fours in a swashbuckling set that helped Sussex to an extra batting point in their rain-affected draw with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Winners = Grinners

Both Hampshire and Gloucestershire got on the board in very different ways on the final day. At the Ageas Bowl, Worcestershire resumed needing 270 for an unlikely win, but succumbed for just 127 in their fourth innings, Fidel Edwards and Kyle Abbott doing the damage for the home side. Over in Canterbury, Gloucestershire held firm in pursuit of the 108 they needed to beat Kent, with opener Benny Howell registering an unbeaten 52 to spark some odd slash worrying scenes in the away changing room.
