All you need to know about Dom Bess

Simply the Bess - 5 things you need to know about England new boy Dom Bess

With the news that Dom Bess has been called up to the England Test squad for the first time ahead of the series against Pakistan, here's everything you need to know him...

Name: Dominic Mark Bess
Age: 20
Club: Somerset
Bowling: Right-arm off break
Batting: Right-hand bat

THRIVES UNDER PRESSURE
Making your County Championship debut can be a daunting experience. Most would be happy to successfully contribute and come away unscathed. Not for Dom Bess. The young spinner took six wickets for 21 runs against Warwickshire back in 2016, including former England duo Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell off successive deliveries, before backing the performance up with another five-wicket haul in the following match as part of Somerset's thrilling push for the Championship title.

BIG HAUL
When Bess gets among the wickets, he really gets in among the wickets. Of the 16 first-class matches he's been involved in, seven of them have seen him finish with at least a five-for to his name. In total, he's claimed 63 wickets from those fixtures at an average of 22.49 and, as you can see from his career-best 7/117 below, once in the rhythm, quickly manages to pull batting line-ups apart with his fast off-spin.

CATCH IT!
Coming from a multi-sport background has given Bess a good all-round grounding, rugby in particular a favourite teenage pastime of his. Couple that with excellent strength and conditioning work he recieved while at Somerset and Bess has become quite the athlete. Calling upon his agility as a former fly half to move swifty over short distances and turn quickly, Bess is a sharp operator when it comes to catching. Especially off his own bowling...

LOVES A BAT
Almost as happy in the middle with a bat as he is with a ball, Bess has already proven himself to be a useful contributor lower down the order. With a first-class century already, scored against Championship title-holders Essex earlier this year, Bess further demonstrated his batting proficiency notching up 92 in his last innings, at home to Hampshire with the likes of Kyle Abbott and Fidel Edwards bowling at him.

ALWAYS WANTS MORE
He's a badger. A very keen badger, and one that's prepared to sniff out every last bit of advice from his seniors that he can. Often found post-match discussing different bowling techniques with the opposition or from umpires mid-match, Bess' natural intrigue at his chosen art looks to be paying off. He's already attempted to add more flight to his deliveries on the advice of Pakistan legend Younis Khan, something his countrymen may rue if Bess gets selected on Thursday.
