Cricket for Teachers

School cricket plays a vital role in helping us make cricket more widely accessible to young people. It provides a platform for children aged 5+ to make friends, learn new skills and develop their fundamental movement skills.

The ECB’s Cricket for Teachers programme is an in-person training offer designed to increase teacher confidence in delivering cricket and boost the number of children playing cricket in state secondary schools.
Delivered by local Recreational Cricket Boards, Cricket for Teachers provides schools with a comprehensive softball cricket offer, including high-quality kit, learning and delivery resources and inclusive format guidance.
This is all free to access for schools and teachers.

The course

The training course is delivered in-person and takes between 2-3 hours. During the session, teachers are shown how to deliver fun and engaging softball cricket games for pupils in years 7 to 11 (ages 11-16).
Teachers will learn about a variety of games suitable for curriculum delivery, in addition to the ECB’s new intra competition format: Secondary Countdown Cricket.
The programme has been designed from an educator’s perspective, so it aligns with the national curriculum and can also be adapted for SEND and ALN settings.

The kit

Once teachers are trained, schools can order a free high-quality, softball kit bag, funded by the ECB.
There are two versions of the kit bag, for both Mainstream and SEND/ALN schools, ensuring that all schools have everything they need to deliver softball cricket that all students can participate in and enjoy.

The learning resources

All teachers will receive individual workbooks as part of their training, which detail the contents of the training course and provide the space for teachers to make notes as they learn about the content.
All kitbags come with Gamecards that clearly illustrate how each Cricket for Teachers game is played. These can be used by both teachers and students to support delivery of the games.
